About Our Staff

RISING STAR Assistant Director Joe Killilea (2nd from left) holds commemorative ball presented to him at our end of week Awards Ceremony in recognition of his 300th career win as head coach at Newton South High School. His sons Dan, Greg and Ryan, all who have attended the camp, pose with their Dad.

Former Melrsose star and All Scholastic Andy Scocca has returned as a coach to RISING STAR.   Andy attended our programs starting in 9th grade and was a key figure in the dramatic turnaround of the Melrose program.
He averaged 20 points and 20 rebounds his senior year! He is now a key member of Bryant University.

The RISING STAR BASKETBALL SCHOOL is directed by KEVIN O'BRIEN, longtime college coach. He has coached at Harvard, Boston University, Brandeis and Stonehill. He is assisted by top high school and college coaches with a mission to teach the game in a thorough and enthusiastic manner. College players and current professionals typically serve as coaches.

Coaches Hired to Teach

We take the hiring our our coaching staff very seriously. Our goal is to have the finest teaching staff in New England. Why? Because we want to have the best camp and the quality of the staff is directly related to the experience of the player.
We want coaches who want to be there to teach with passion and encourage the improvement of players attending. It does not matter if it is a high school star or younger player attending his first camp.  We hire based on this. Many of our coaches return every summer because they believe in this approach. At Rising Star effort and enthusiasm is expected every day. We take great pride in our basketball camp.

We value creating a quality experience in which to teach and motivate, and keep a low coach-to-player ratio to ensure this occurs. Additionally, we divided our players into different divisions based on age and ability. This allows our coaches to challenge players at an appropriate level. Our desire is to help our players improve their skills, learn more about basketball, and have a positive experience!

"The Rising Star Basketball School is a terrific opportunity for players to learn from the staff that is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals and learning the game in a competitive atmosphere."
